Diabetes is a very serious medical condition that affects more than 21 million Americans. The most common feature of the disease is that those afflicted have very high blood sugar levels. There are two types of diabetes and both are managed by diet and exercise, and in some cases also oral and injectable medication (insulin). Many more people have what is called ‘pre-diabetes’ which means that you have higher than normal blood sugar, but have not yet been diagnosed with diabetes. If you have pre-diabetes blood sugar levels, many times you can change your diet and lifestyle and either delay or eliminate the onset of diabetes.
Type Two Diabetes
This is the most common form of the disease and is often called ‘adult onset’ diabetes, although you can get it at any age. With type 2 diabetes the body does not use its naturally occurring insulin properly or simply does not produce enough insulin. Being overweight is a major risk factor for developing Type 2 diabetes.
By reducing your weight by even 5 percent you can dramatically improve your health, including glucose levels, haemoglobin A1C, blood pressure and cholesterol. It may also be possible to reduce or eliminate the need for medication.
Type One Diabetes
This type of diabetes is usually diagnosed in childhood and occurs when the body does not produce insulin naturally at all. This results in sky-high blood sugar levels and requires an injection of insulin daily. Diet must also be carefully monitored. Too much insulin can also be problematic, leading to very low levels of blood sugar.
Medifast
Medifast is perfect for people with Type Two diabetes, but the program is not recommended for those with Type One diabetes. Medifast does have a special program designed just for sufferers of type 2 diabetes. It should be noted that Medifast recommends all participants to consult their family physician before starting this low calorie diet.
All Medifast meals have very strict calorie and carb content, which makes them ideal for those with Type 2 diabetes. As an added bonus all Medifast meals are also low on the glycemic index and therefore are designed to keep blood sugar levels constant with none of the spiking that is so dangerous for diabetes sufferers. It also controls hunger and helps you feel full longer.
Medifast Plus is the line of shakes for those with diabetes. These shakes are even lower in sugar and carbohydrates than the regular line of shakes and meal replacements. These shakes contain less than 6 grams of sugar, 10 or less grams of total carbohydrates and they carry the Glycemic Research Institute’s seal of approval.
There is a major clinical study that proves that the Medifast diet can have a significant positive effect on those with Type Two diabetes. You may even be able to reduce or eliminate your need for medication just by eating healthy and exercising. Above all, Medifast strongly recommends that you consult with a physician or diabetes specialist before beginning a Medifast diet program. You will want to regularly and frequently monitor your blood sugar levels and discuss medication needs, especially during the first 2-3 weeks of the Medifast program while your body adjusts to the diet.
